(Milledgeville, Ga) — As the U.S. prepares for the most extensive vaccination program in its history, Georgia health officials announced the arrival of the first shipment of COVID-19 shots.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), 5,850 doses of the vaccine arrived in Coastal Georgia on Monday.

“We will actually begin administering a very small number of doses to some of our frontline staff later this (Monday) afternoon,” said Dr. Lawton Davis, Coastal Health District health director. “It is anticipated that we will be able to roll this out to other members of the top priority group tomorrow.”

The Coastal Health District encompasses Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties.

“Additional shipments of the vaccine are expected later this week at facilities in other parts of the state, including Metro Atlanta,” the Georgia Department of Public Health said in a statement.

The Pfizer vaccine will be stored in specialized freezers.
