Hand recount ordered in Georgia's presidential race
(Milledgeville, Ga) — Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger announced Wednesday that he has ordered a statewide recount of all ballots cast in Georgia’s presidential election.
“This will help build confidence,” Raffensberger said. “It will be an audit, a recount, and a recanvass all at once.”
Election officials in each of Georgia’s 159 counties will perform the recounts. “We will work with the counties to get this done in time for our state certification,” added Raffensberger.
The deadline for state certification is November 20th. In recent days the secretary has come under fire from some in his party, including Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, who called for his resignation.
“We have all worked hard to bring fair and accurate counts to assure that the will of the voters is reflected in the final count,” Raffensberger said. “And that every voter will have confidence in the outcome whether their candidate won or lost.”
Additionally, he nixed plans for state office runoffs to be held on December 1st; they will instead be moved to the Federal date of January 5th. “This will protect the integrity of both elections and make for better election administration,” he said.
